Tallahassee's New Year's Baby

While millions around the world rang in the new year with whistles and bells, a Madison woman is ringing in 2006 with the area’s first baby born in the Big Bend area.

2006 is here, and for many it started with a bang, but for 23-year-old Shandra Treadwell the new year brought a different beginning, a bundle of joy.

Shandra Treadwell says, "I'm real happy, real happy. I'm just happy he made it here."

Treadwell is the proud mother of a bouncing baby boy named Di'nijai Daeqwoine. Di'Nijai is the first baby born in the Tallahassee area in 2006. He weighs in at six pounds, 12 ounces and 18 inches long.

Although Di'Nijai's mother is a little soft spoken, he is making his presence known. Treadwell went into labor around 6 a.m. on the 31st, and little Di'Nijai was born one minute after one New Year's day.

Treadwell adds, "It was long; to me it was long. It was real long."

Even though her nearly 24-hour labor was enduring, Treadwell says she feels lucky for her extra special delivery, and she's not the only one excited. Family and friends are ready to meet baby Di'Nijai.

Treadwell says, "They're so excited. They’re just waiting on me to come home."

But they'll have to wait until Treadwell and her New Year's baby are released from the hospital before heading home to Madison.

South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta says its New Year's baby is a boy born at 2:47 a.m., and at Thomasville's Archbold Medical Center, a girl was born at 3:16 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
