The Thomasville city council purchased new turnout gear for Thomasville firefighters estimated at $1,200 per set.
Firefighters say the new gear is made of lighter material that can withstand temperatures of up to $1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.
CAPT Tim Connell with the Thomasville Fire Department says, "It's very important for us to get the lighter, cooler gear. We can stay in the house longer. If we're doing search and rescue on a victim we are able to go deeper into the house if we have to [in order to] to get the job done."
Firefighters say the new gear has a harness system built in to the jacket and if a firefighter is down they can retrieve him and get out of the house a lot faster and safer than before.
