The U.S. Supreme Court issued a temporary stay Tuesday evening to Florida death row inmate Clarence Hill.
Hill was scheduled to die at 6 p.m., but no word was handed down from the justices until well after 7.
Hill was convicted of killing a Pensacola police officer 23 years ago.
Hill's attorney says his client is mentally retarded.
