Madison Seniors Need New Building

There's a higher concentration of senior citizens living in Madison County than almost all the other counties in our viewing area. Right now the seniors are crowding into a house-turned-senior center. And raising money for a new building has been going slower than many of the seniors themselves.

More than 300 seniors count on fellowship and fun at the center, with another 128 seniors counting on a daily knock on the door from its Meals on Wheels program.

For the past three years, the senior center director has been trying to raise money to build a new multi-purpose center that can offer more space and more activities. But it'll cost about $400,000. And at the current pace of $7,000 a year, that elbow room could be a long time coming.

The center director says they're hoping the legislature can come up with some money to help them. Other than that, they're counting on the community to chip in.

A fundraising dinner is slated for Saturday night at 6 p.m. at nearby Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Madison. Julie Montanaro, Jennifer Ryan and Valerie Lacy will be there waiting tables. Feel free to join us!!!
