Heart disease is preventable, not inevitable.

FAMU senior Nikki Murray says her family has a history of heart problems, and Nikki herself admits to having high blood pressure and a weight problem for years, but last May she joined a gym and has lost 30 pounds.

Murray says, "It's a feeling that's worth more than money and gold. I encourage any young person who feels they can't do it, they can. It's the little changes not the big changes."

Murray is hoping other young people, particularly, African-Americans, will follow her lead by eating healthy and exercising.

Besides weight and high blood pressure, modifiable risk factors for heart disease are smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes and physical inactivity.
