Gretna, FL - There's a new police chief in the City of Gretna.
Carlos De La Cruz was sworn in at Gretna City Hall Friday morning. He says it's a dream come true.
De La Cruz was hired at the Gretna Police Department in 2007. He served a short stint with the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco before returning to the Gretna P.D. in 2011. In 2012, became the Interim Police Chief.
Chief De La Cruz says, "I have a plan in place. I think with the community's help, and I intend to meet with most of the folks that want to be part of this plan. I think we'll have a positive effect in the community."
De La Cruz's family traveled from Orlando for the ceremony. His mother had the honor of pinning on his chief of police badge.

GRETNA, FL – Gretna City Manager Antonio Jefferson has appointed Carlos De La Cruz as the new Chief of Police of the Gretna Police Department. De La Cruz previously served as Interim Police Chief of the Gretna Police Department. “It is a pleasure to promote a qualified member of the Gretna police force to the position of Chief of Police. Chief De La Cruz has been a dedicated member of the Gretna Police Department and is very deserving of this appointment,” said Jefferson.
De La Cruz was initially hired to the Gretna Police Department in 2007 as a Patrolman. He was later promoted to Patrol Sergeant before a short stint with the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco. De La Cruz returned to the Gretna Police Department in 2011 as Captain. In 2012 he became the Interim Police Chief.
Chief De La Cruz was certified through the Osceola County Criminal Justice Academy and the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco. He has also completed training courses at the Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy. "I am extremely proud of this appointment. My hard work and determination has been key to my success,” Chief De La Cruz said. “The majority of my law enforcement career has been spent being part of this fine police department and now I get the opportunity to lead this department.”
