Next month hundreds will converge on Iwo Jima to commemorate the 61st anniversary.
Ex-Marine and former Circuit Court Judge Charles McClure is heading to Iwo Jima. Following the battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 between the United States and imperial Japan, the U.S. gained control of the island.
"It was a ferocious battle during World War II, so many Marines and servicemen died on that five and a half miles. It was a step closer to capturing Japan," says McClure.
The commemoration will take place March 3 through the 10th.
