Tallahassee, FL - A woman is killed after getting hit by a Jeep. Authorities say she was walking across a busy street in eastern Leon County.
Yogi Kumar serves hundreds of customers every day at Mahan Petro on Mahan Drive in Tallahassee. He greeted one of his regulars, 28-year-old Elisa Durr, for the last time Wednesday night.
"I asked her how was her Thanksgiving and all." He says.
The Florida Highway Patrol says Durr was hit and killed by a Jeep just before 9:30 Wednesday night. They say she was walking across Mahan Drive near Buck Lake Road at the time.
Kumar says Durr came into his store around 9 p.m. and told him that she'd locked her keys in her car at the McDonald's across the street. He says she walked across Mahan Drive, used the phone at the store, and attempted to walk back across.
Kumar says, "I went, got her the phone book and gave her the phone and that was it. All of a sudden, we saw the car, police coming and all that. On the way crossing back, she got hit."
Authorities say the impact from the Jeep threw Durr into the median, where she landed against a tree.
Shaquieta Thomas works at McDonald's. She quickly realized how busy Mahan Drive is when she walked across for the first time Thursday. She says, "It's scary. you can be here one minute and be gone the next minute. It's a scary scene to know that somebody got hit by a car."
"We'll miss her. She was a good soul." Says, Kumar.
No fault has been determined. Authorities say charges against the driver, 31-year-old Joyce Tien-Yue Liu, are pending.
