Volunteers Set Up Mobile Disaster Kitchen

The Capital Area Red Cross is training volunteers how to set up and operate its Mobile Disaster Kitchen Thursday and Friday.

Its temporary home is the parking lot of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church on North Meridian Road.

On Friday at 12 p.m., 200 free meals will be given out to the public.

"It's very important for us to constantly be in a training mode, provide instruction to get this kitchen into the field, set it up, make it operational so that we can then turnaround and prepare about 8,000 to 10,000 meals a day,” explains Chris Floyd, Director of the Capital Area Red Cross.

The kitchen was deployed three times in 2005. The 2006 hurricane season starts June 1.
