Trooper's Memorial

Families of slain Florida troopers gathered in Tallahassee Friday, to witness the unveiling of a new memorial.

The bronze statue was crafted by a Tallahassee artist, and families of the fallen say it's a beautiful way to say “Thank You.”

The three troopers stand side by side, a veteran with the old cross draw holster, a woman gently touching her partner’s arm, and front and center, a trooper with the hat of a fallen comrade in his hands.

Keith Ann Fulford was among those admiring the memorial. Her husband Jimmie was killed during a traffic stop in Jefferson County in 1992.

Neva Jones of Tallahassee lost her husband, trooper Saxton Jones, in an accidental shooting in 1995. This bronze statue was paid for by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and Florida businessman John Sykes.

It will ultimately be placed at the highway patrol's new training facility in midway.

A salute from the sculptor, and Floridians everywhere to troopers who have laid down their lives in the name of duty and service.

That's a harrowing average of one trooper every 18 months.
