Florida's Lt. Gov. Makes Final Appearance

Florida's second-in-command attended his last official function as the State's Lieutenant Gov. Friday. Frank brogan will officially resign his post Monday to take on the presidency of Florida Atlantic University. As Victoria Langley tells us, it was an emotional day for Brogan, and he leaves the governor with some tough choices to make.

Frank Brogan has been on an emotional roller coaster since Florida Atlantic University named him its new president.

Brogan unveiled a memorial to fallen troopers in his last official act as Lt. Gov. He choked up as he talked about the Florida Department of Law Enforcement agent who guarded him around the clock. Even as Brogan's first wife was dying a few months after he took office in 1999.

Brogan will be a tough act to follow and the governor knows it. Names surfacing as possible replacements include former Senate President Toni Jennings and Jacksonville Mayor John Delaney.

“I'm looking for someone who's compatible and someone who shares my vision for the reforms that are underway and I'm looking for someone who has a joyful attitude. Perhaps one of Frank Brogan's most valuable qualities has been his sense of humor and his ability to diffuse tense budget negotiations and personality conflicts. That will be tough to duplicate.”

Political consultant Barney Bishop says the Lt. Gov’s job is more important than many people realize.

“That's really what you use your Lt. Gov. for, is to help facilitate the legislative agenda, and this governor's got a large agenda, and you've got a house and senate that aren't necessarily on the same wavelength right now.”

Brogan has one word of advice for his successor: He plans to be back at the capitol Tuesday for the governor's State of the State Address. This time as an invited guest. Lt Gov. Frank Brogan will submit his resignation Monday, when the State Board of Governors will meet to consider his appointment to Florida Atlantic University.

Provided he is approved, Brogan says he will sign his new contract the same day.
