You may be surprised to learn that right next to this tiny dirt road in Mitchell County sits a plant that will soon be capable of producing 100 million gallons of corn-based ethanol annually.

Monday we took our cameras on site at First United Ethanol LLC, also known as FUEL, where construction is slated to wrap up in 8 weeks and ethanol production will be underway in October.

Officials say soon rail traffic will increase as trains bring in bushels of corn from the Midwest, but officials say the project is keeping local farmers in mind, too.

"When we can start buying locally, they don't have to pay freight and we don't have to pay freight out. We can share and that can be a very significant amount of money per bushel, so they'll make money and we'll make money doing it," said Larry Kamp, CFO First United Ethanol LLC.

FUEL officials say there are many positives that come with making ethanol in southwest Georgia.

For one, there is no waste in the production of ethanol because the only byproducts are a corn mush that can be used as livestock feed and CO2 which we can be turned into dry ice.

But also the project will make a huge economic impact in our area creating hundreds of jobs.

"At any moment they may have 200 to 300 people on site, they've had different crews coming in and out and different subcontractors who our bringing their employees so its been a huge boom to the local economy,"said Alicia Shirah, Director of Communications at FUEL.

Once FUEL is up and running the plant will employ 55 full time workers
