"Save the Library"

“Save the library.” That is what hundreds of protesters chanted Tuesday in downtown Tallahassee.

It was a demonstration to keep a large portion of the state library from relocating to south Florida.

The Governor’s office says it wants to move the circulation collection from the state library in Tallahassee to Nova Southeastern University in Broward County.

Supports fear the actions of the state legislature will take the library away. If legislators vote in favor, more than 350,000 volumes of fiction, non-fiction, periodicals, and audio-visual materials will be moved in July.

Library officials say just over 10 percent of these books left the shelves last year. Still, opponents argue the library should be kept in tact and 55 jobs should also be retained.

Gov. Jeb Bush says the transfer will save the state more than $10 million over the next four years.
