Medical error prevention and health care education are the focus of Florida's Patient Safety Awareness Week.
It's part of a national effort to educate patients about becoming more involved in their own health care. The Florida Patient Safety Corporation says this issue is one of the state's most pressing health care challenges.
Spokespersons say the more a patient communicates, the better.
Dr. Risa Rahm says, "You could be under duress, stress if you are in for surgery or under the influence of drugs that help surgery. So taking and advocate along with you or somebody that could help speak and answer question, just so you have the communication lines open."
Along with bringing a friend with you, Dr. Rahm Romm suggests preparing a list of questions for your doctor as well as providing a list of medications you are taking, including herbal remedies.
