Ruling Made on Race Track

Updated: Thu 7:13 PM, Mar 06, 2003

Race fans are revving up their hopes that a Leon County drag strip will be reopening.

The racetrack on Highway 20 has been closed for decades. Now a judge has sided with the track owners and against neighborhood residents.

This week an administrative judge refused to keep the drag strip from reopening. It is good news for race fans, but bad news fro some locals nearby.

Oliver Duncan is into cutting wood, not burning rubber. He says he is fine with plans to be re-open a drag strip just a few hundred yards from his front porch. He remembers when the drag strip was running decades ago. “It was loud at times but it wasn’t that loud. Wasn’t as loud as these people around here make out.” Said Oliver Duncan.

Before racers get to geared up, Leon County Commissioners could still put the brakes on the track. If the track does go through, then racing could begin as soon as this fall.
