Tallahassee surgeons are giving a Haitian teen-ager a second chance at life. It's called Operation Walk, where the culmination of doctors, surgeons, and state politicians have joined hands to save a stranger far from home.

Nineteen-year-old Maudelyne Germain had a life threatening growth on her left foot when she went to see Dr. Woodie Smith in Haiti.

Smith knew the growth needed treatment right away and began the eight-month process to get Germain to Tallahassee for treatment after several heartfelt letters from Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Bob Graham. Germain made it to the Capitol City, for a new foot and a new life.

The Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic donated all the staff and services for the operation. Germain should be on the road to recovery right now, she received her prosthetic foot Wednesday afternoon, and doctors say she'll be ready to fly home at the end of the month.
