Red Horse Hills Trials Tragedy

Updated: Mon 8:39 AM, Mar 10, 2003

The second round of the Red Hills Horse Trials ends on a sad note when one of the horses collapsed and died.

Olympic medallist David O'Conner was riding his 14 year-old thoroughbred, "The Native" when it approached an obstacle known as the windmill pond and collapsed.

During a press conference, an on site veterinarian said the horse may have suffered a heart attack. The collapse was not believed to be related to O'Conner, the horse's footing or the construction of the course.

O'Conner is riding multiple horses, and will continue in the competition. The horse will be taken to the University of Florida college of Veterinarian Medicine where a necropsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The Red Hills Horse Trials will wrap up on Sunday with the stadium jumping competition.
