Tallahassee FL- A new House Bill would make it a law where Public Officers have to be drug tested.
House Bill 1435, titled "Drug Free Public Officers Act" was filed Tuesday by Republican Representative Dane Eagle. The act would require certain public officers, like elected officials on the federal, state, and municipal level to take a drug test. Anyone who fails the drug test would be required to enroll in a drug rehabilitation center. Anyone refusing to take the test would have to resign.
"We need to be as elected officials held to a higher standard so when we serve our constituents. When we are away they understand that we are here working for them... We aren't off doing other things. If drugs are illegal then we should be checked on that. It is just the basic idea for me and I believe other legislatures will be warm to that," explained Representative Dane Eagle.
Eagle also filed House Bill 1437 which would exempt drug tests from being public record. He told us the purpose of the bill isn't to hurt anyone's reputation, but instead to hold public officers accountable.
