The governor recognized several community groups from around the state during a Capitol press conference.
He has set a goal of reducing suicides in the state by a third by the year 2010.
Gov. Jeb Bush says, “We’re here today to raise awareness about a very difficult and serious issue. In 2004, suicide was the ninth leading cause of death in Florida, with 2,382 Floridians committing suicide. That’s 2,382 Floridians too many.”
The governor and lawmakers are trying again this year to pass legislation creating an office dedicated to suicide prevention in Florida.
