Celebrating Children

Making reading fun for children is the main goal this month at Florida's state library.

As the band plays Florida's state librarian hopes children will grasp the concept of the day’s festival.

Judi Ring, a state librarian, says, "To celebrate reading and literacy and family literacy and reading to children of all cultures and finding out about the cultural heritage of different groups in Florida."

The kick-off event, Celebrate Children - Celebrate Books, is part of a nationwide bash, El Dia De Los Ninos, El Dia De Los Libros.

The goal is to introduce children to different cultures while experiencing the joy of reading.

Ring adds, "The best gift you can give to your child is to read to them from a very young age. It expands their world; it expands their horizons."

And many parents agree getting their children hooked at a young age is a step in the right direction.

Elizabeth Arthur, a parent supporting literacy, comments on her daughter, "She's in kindergarten and she knows how to read now and we really promote reading at our house, and I think it's a wonderful thing that the museum is doing it too."

Even the characters think it's important to celebrate children and promote literacy. Throughout the month, the state library will host different events.
