People often joke about doctors' poor handwriting, but a south Florida lawmaker says illegible prescriptions are no laughing matter.

Rep. Shelley Vana of West Palm Beach has filed legislation requiring prescriptions be written clearly or typed out. She says hard-to-read prescriptions can prove fatal.

"We want to make sure the pharmacists can read a prescription, that there's no ambiguity. We believe that it will save time, on the part of the pharmacist and the patient, and it will save lives,” Vana says.

The Florida Medical and Pharmacy Associations support the bill. It cleared its first House committee this week, but has three more to go before it would reach the House floor for a vote.
