The Bush administration in Washington wants to redraw the existing lease boundaries and come up with a new plan for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
Supporters of the restrictions want an amendment on the ballot this fall.
“A constitutional amendment, which would not only be the strongest stand Floridians could take against offshore drilling, it would also send the strongest message possible to congress that we don’t want oil drilling off our coast now or any time in the future,” says Sen. Skip Campbell.
Campbell admits the feds would not be bound by an amendment to the state constitution, but he says it’s the best way to make the point that Florida’s beaches need protection.
