FCAT in Gadsden County

Brittany Stalans is all smiles after scoring a 4.5 on the writing portion of the FCAT.

Brittany says, “I was so excited and I couldn't wait to get home to tell my mom. She would be very excited."

She's not the only fourth grade student at George Munroe Elementary scoring high marks on the test.

Keldrick Woodard adds, "I thought I did good. I was so excited.”

School officials attribute the students' success to hard work, determination and community involvement.

Principal Bonnie Blitch says, "We've had mentors come in and do writing sessions with the kids, effective teaching strategy on the part of the teachers. They've been very focused and the students have been involved with the writing."

That involvement resulted in an 11 percent increase in students scoring 3.5 and above on the writing portion of the FCAT, erasing doubts these kids are certainly capable of excelling against the odds.

Fourth grade teacher Jacqueline Johnson says, "They are really shutting down the negativity. We're proud of them. There is a lot of academic talent in Gadsden County and we're letting people know it's here and we have definitely arrived."

It’s proving these students have what it takes to write their way to academic success.
