Coach Accused of Molesting Student

A high school baseball coach has been arrested and accused of molesting a 14-year-old student.

Rickards High Coach Cedric Brooks is in jail facing felony charges after a school surveillance video showed the two on a late night rendezvous.

We talked to coach Cedric Brooks just a few weeks ago. Now this first year baseball coach is in the Leon County Jail accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl in a Rickards High locker room.

SGT Tim Baxter of the Leon County Sheriff's Office said, "He was soliciting her to have some type of sexual contact, very much soliciting her. She refrained from actual sexual contact, but he did reach up under her clothing and touch her on her bare breast."

The alleged incident happened back on April 23. Administrators were reviewing school surveillance tapes in hopes of catching a vandal when they spotted something more disturbing.

Dr. Pink Hightower, Rickards High School Principal, said, "We were looking at surveillance tape and we were looking for, trying to identify kids for vandalism, and we just happened to run across a tape we thought was suspicious and the investigation took forth from there."

Arrest papers say Brooks picked up the 14-year-old at the Monterey Apartments that night, stopped by a motel but didn't get a room, and then wound up at the school. The times on the surveillance tape are 1:43 to 2:12 a.m.

SGT Tim Baxter said, "The video tape was very critical because it showed him walking into a hallway at 1:43 in the morning on a Sunday morning with a young female student."

Initially the teen told deputies they just hugged in the locker room, but arrest papers show subsequent interviews revealed much more including coach Brooks asking her to undress so he could masturbate in front of her. He's now facing lewd and lascivious molestation charges and administrators say she has been transferred to another school.

Superintendent Bill Montford says for now Brooks will remain suspended with pay. He says Brooks has worked for the school district for two years and has no prior disciplinary record.

Brooks remains in jail and will have his first appearance before a judge Saturday morning.
