Based on impressive satellite images, Ike's estimated sustained winds have been raised to 115 mph, making it a category three hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Ike is the third major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic season (Bertha and Gustav were the previous two). Further strenthening is possible on Thursday, but Ike will remain over the open waters of the Atlantic for at least a few more days before it could possibly affect the islands of the northeastern Caribbean and then perhaps the Bahamas by early next week. Here is the special advisory from the National Hurricane Center.
