Fatal Accident

A Leon County sheriff's deputy has been killed in a traffic accident.

The sheriff's department is not yet releasing the deputy's name, but says he was off duty when he died in a motorcycle accident Tuesday morning.

A work crew found the deputy's body. The crew was removing a fallen tree from Baum Road in eastern Leon County.

Leon County Sheriff Larry Campbell says the deputy was "not" wearing a helmet.

So far, the cause of the accident has not been determined. Subsequent investigation revealed it was a deputy with Leon County Sheriff's Office, off duty, riding his personal motorcycle. He hit a tree and was killed instantly at the scene.

Sheriff Campbell says it was upsetting for deputies to arrive on the scene of an accident, and find out the victim was one of their own.
