A deadly car crash killed a Lincoln High School senior two days before she was set to graduate. Her teenaged driver is recovering at home.
It happened on Capitola Road Monday afternoon.
Investigators say the car veered off the road, slammed into a tree and landed upside down in a ditch.
The 17-year-old driver survived. The passenger, 18-year-old Cherita Smith, was airlifted to the hospital but did not survive.
Deputies suspect the driver was speeding.
"In an area out here where there is rural areas without a lot of businesses or residences, people have a tendency to drive a little fast," said SGT David Frimmel.
There is no word on whether alcohol or drugs played a factor.
