AP (Washington, D.C.)-John McCain's effort to portray himself as a bold leader willing to set politics aside to save an endangered financial bailout plan is taking a pounding from top Democrats and even some fellow Republicans.

Democrats in Congress ridiculed McCain's role after a chaotic end to a White House summit meeting that McCain had requested, and which included Barack Obama.

McCain's own campaign says the session "devolved into a contentious shouting match.''

The campaign statement suggested Obama was at fault.

But Democrats are disdainful.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says McCain "only hurt the process.''

Officials will try again this morning to come up with an agreement.

The vote in the House against federal intervention in our financial crisis is the result of ignorance and cowardice: ignorance of the public and cowardice of those facing re-election challenges. The public was distracted by demonizing Wall Street, receiving nothing of the details of the loans to banks secured by federal ownership so that future sale of revived assets would return some value to the Treasury. I believe the damage of delay will cost more people greater loss than the public debt option (bailout) would have cost. Answer to today's poll: I disagree with the House vote.

Firstly, there isn't a god. Secondly, vote for the person, not the party.
