A suspicious package forces the evacuation of Tallahassee police headquarters. It arrived in the blink of an eye.
The officer who mans the front desk got up to make a photo copy. When he got back minutes later, a large box was on his desk with no sign of who may have put it there.
A TPD spokesman says it had a local return address and the name of a former officer on the box. The building was evacuated and the bomb squad robot went in.
CAPT Chris Connell of the Tallahassee Police Department said, "Right now the contents are inconclusive, but it's not something we walked away and said it's nothing. There are some items in there that gave us some concern."
We got word from Tallahassee police that the box didn't contain anything dangerous: computer equipment, a pair of running shoes, some medication and a letter addressed to former narcotics OFC Roger Salmonson. The name on the outside of the package was fictitious, but officers say the return address was real.
They wound up taking Charles Layman into protective custody for mental health evaluation. Police say he will not face criminal charges.
