New Housing Option for Tallahassee's Low-Income Families

A new program will soon put roofs over the heads of some of the 1,000 homeless people in Leon County.

Brand new affordable homes are also being built for veterans, single moms and the disabled.

Leaky roofs and lack of air conditioning will be a thing off the past for Marc Munday and his family. Munday says he's tried fixing his two bedroom trailer to make it livable, but it became too much of a costly project. That will soon change.

The couple will be moving just a few feet away into a brand new manufactured home.

The Munday's three bedroom home was made possible by the Good News Outreach Program, a non-profit organization.

Roman Catholic Bishop John Ricard blessed the homes with holy water and prayed the families would be protected from danger and harm.

The rent for these new trailers ranges from $125 to $300 a month depending on the family’s income.

Facts about Homelessness

On any given night, 750,000 Americans are homeless.
Over the course of a year, as many as two million people experience homelessness for some period of time.
These are the people who live on the street, in shelters, in cars, and in campgrounds.
Millions more live in precarious situations—over-crowded with family or friends, housed temporarily in institutions like prisons or mental hospitals, or paying too much of their income for rent.
The fastest growing group of homeless people consists of families with children.
Families make up about 36 percent of the people who become homeless.
The typical homeless family consists of a young unmarried mother with two or three small children.
Many of these young mothers are fleeing domestic violence, and most lack the work skills, access to child care, or access to jobs necessary to support their families.
