AmeriCorps in Tallahassee

The hot temperatures serve as a reminder that hurricane season is approaching. In fact, it's only 23 days away.

Already, preparations have begun in the capital city, and this year Tallahassee is getting a wave of help from some out-of-towners.

AmeriCorps members arriving from South Carolina flooded the American Red Cross parking lot Thursday afternoon. Their mission, to install hurricane shutters on low-income homes, predominately in Tallahassee’s Frenchtown area.

This group serves communities all over the southeast. In exchange for their work, they get a stipend for college. However, participants say the true payment comes from within.

But, while they may beat the storms, some of these Northerners will find out they can't beat the heat.

The AmeriCorps group will be installing hurricane shutters for two weeks.
