Incoming Freshmen Concerned About Budget Cuts

While university presidents are campaigning across the sunshine state, word is spreading throughout college campuses about concerns over funding. Friday, we spoke with new students and their parents attending orientation at Florida State University.

By the time new students begin classes this fall, Florida’s budget for higher education should be set in stone. Parents are hoping the final product doesn't carve out the $100 million anticipated by university presidents.

For Ferris' daughter, Kaitlin, less funding means more out of her pocket.

“It’s hard to pay for it by yourself,” she says.

Holding news conferences across the state, Florida university presidents want students and parents to fully understand how deep cuts will hurt them. With talk of tuition hikes and less scholarships, parents are listening.

“There's a lot of students who will suffer, they have to work, could be a real problem if they cut more,” says James Patterson, an FSU parent.

Gov. Bush has said he believes the university presidents will be pleased with the final budget. Bush plans to meet with the presidents next week.
