Tallahassee city commissioners have approved an action to have Tallahassee Community College host a minimum standards training program for firefighters.
Currently, there is no local facility that offers this training, with the nearest academy over 60 miles away.
"If we can offer training here locally to kids just out of high school that maybe wouldn't be able to take the training somewhere else, then they'll be more committed to our department, and our community is better off for it," says Tallahassee Fire Chief Cindy Dick.
TFD already has the approval from the state fire college to become a regional training center. This move has yet to be approved by TCC's Board of Trustees.
The Minimum Standards program is designed to offer the knowledge and skills necessary for an individual to complete the Florida state examination and become a Florida state certified firefighter.
