Back in the city where he claimed history, Barack Obama presided Sunday over a Colorado rally so enormous and energetic that even he seemed surprised at his following.
"Goodness gracious," Obama said as he took the stage and peered at the human mass in Denver's Civic Center Park. Smelling victory, Obama supporters were everywhere, packing even the steps of the state Capitol way off in the distance.
In a campaign of huge Obama rallies across the United States, the Denver gathering topped them all. Local police put the crowd estimate at "well over" 100,000 people.
The setting, on a sparkling day in this battleground state, said perhaps more than Obama did in his actual speech. It rippled with the kind of enthusiasm found at victory rallies.
Later, in Fort Collins, there was more symbolism in the eyes of Obama backers. Obama spoke to tens of thousands of people on a Colorado State University lawn known as "The Oval."
Obama's campaign is capitalizing on the scope of such rallies to get people to cast votes early, permitted in Colorado and more than two dozen other states.
"How many people have early voted?" Obama said, eliciting cheers from people bundled up in fleece. "That's what I'm talking about. No point in waiting in lines if you don't have to. You know who you're going to vote for."
Still, wary of complacency or overconfidence, Obama keeps warning supporters that they must work, fight and even struggle for the rest of the campaign. His opponent, Republican John McCain, is needling Obama for starting his victory lap without having won anything.
Said McCain of the race on Sunday, "I'm going to win it."
Polls put Obama ahead in Colorado with the number of campaign days remaining now down to single digits.
It was in Denver that Obama, in his groundbreaking campaign, accepted the Democratic Party's presidential nomination at the stadium where the Denver Broncos play. If elected, he would be the first black president of the United States.
"Do you ever have small crowds in Denver?" a smiling Obama said. Members of the crowd interrupted Obama's standard campaign speech with shouts of "Obama!" and "Yes we can!"
Traditionally, Colorado has gone for Republicans in presidential races, including twice for George W. Bush. Obama is trying to snag a win here as part of a multi-route path to capture at least the minimum 270 electoral votes on Nov. 4.
Colorado offers nine such votes.
In Fort Collins, where trees of golden leaves lined the campus, Obama seemed to revel in what was unfolding. "What a spectacular crowd and a spectacular day," he said.
Obama also jumped on McCain's comment, made during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," that he and President Bush share a "common philosophy" of the Republican Party.
"I guess that was John McCain finally giving us a little straight talk, owning up to the fact that he and George Bush actually have a whole lot in common," Obama said in Denver.
"Well, here's the thing," he added. "We know what the Bush-McCain philosophy looks like. It's a philosophy that says we should give more and more to millionaires and billionaires and hope that it trickles down."
Obama, though, did not quote McCain fully.
The Republican presidential candidate also said: "I've stood up against my party, not just President Bush, but others; and I've got the scars to prove it." He also offered specific examples of differing with Bush, from Iraq strategy and deficit spending to campaign finance reform and climate change.
McCain also has campaigned aggressively in the state, as has his running mate, Sarah Palin.
More broadly, Obama is using his record-breaking fund raising advantage to buy up media time and make what he hopes is a closing argument for the presidency. McCain and his team say the race is hardly over, particularly for a candidate who's had his share of comebacks.
Obama released a new TV ad Sunday that describes McCain as Obama often does on the campaign trail -- as "out of ideas, out of touch and running out of time." It also says McCain is resorting to smears and scare tactics because he doesn't have a plan to fix the economy.
The 30-second ad will begin running Monday on national cable television outlets.

Dear Eben Cabot, Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii. There is a federal case against Barack Obama to produce his birth records, for which he has NOT complied. If Obama is a natural born citizen (as required to be President), then why isn't he cooperating with the court? Let's say for the sake of argument that Obama was born in the U.S. well...Obama spent four years in school in Indonesia while living with his mother and step-father, while Indonesia was at war. Therefore the only people who could attend school in Indonesia at that time were people who were citizens of Indonesia. Indonesia did not provide for dual citizenship. Therefore, Obama would have been an Indonesian citizen, so when he returned from Indonesia he would have had the opportunity to become a naturalized citizen, which is not a natural born citizen and does not qualify him to be President of the U.S. Obama=Fraud
LET'S VOTE OBAMA FOR 08
Trisha everyone knows this country is in bad shape, people are in denial about a lot of things concerning our constitional rights,As americans our rights have been taken away and replaced by what the government says until people stand up for what they believe in instead of talking about it things will only get worse (if that is possible).Everyday things change not for the better though. It is a sad situation and all we can do is accept it or start fighting back against the polititians in Washington.
