The cleanup efforts began in January and the site manager says they are close to ridding the area of the contaminants, mainly coal tar from an old plant.
The Cascades Park Project has been a joint effort between the city, state, and federal agencies. The cleanup has received national recognition and has attracted the attention of other cities looking to Cascades as a role model for clearing environmental problems.
"That's like icing on the cake for us. This has been a great project and to have it recognized nationally is just fantastic."
Once the cleanup is complete, the city plans to develop the area into a multi-purpose public park in the heart of downtown.
