Lead contamination is detected in the soil around the St. Marks lighthouse.
Wildlife Refuge Manager James Burnett says a preliminary survey last spring found lead levels too high, even for an industrial sight.
Until that's fixed, the lighthouse cannot be transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
If the Coast Guard doesn't have the money to clean it up, the federal transfer and the renovations could be on hold for perhaps another year.
