There’s a crowded slate for governor; 19 people signed up for the race, including five Democrats, four Republicans, six write-in candidates, three independents and one member of the reform party.
This was also the final day to sign up for a run at the state Legislature where Democrats are trying to chip away at Republicans who dominate both the House and the state.
Steve Schale of the Florida Democratic Party said, “Our goal was to field competitive candidates in as many seats as possible, and we feel like after qualifying that we have a great number of opportunities from the panhandle all the way to the keys, and hopefully begin to turn the tide back our way.”
Forty incumbent state lawmakers were automatically re-elected because no one filed to run against them. That group includes 28 Republicans and 12 Democrats.
