A Florida Football Team Is A No Show In Holiday Bowl Game

What was supposed to be an All star game between teams from Texas and Florida ended up being one big headache for the organizers... and a new year's day disappointment for many young football players.

65 football players from San Antonio and Austin showed up at Bragg Stadium in Tallahassee to the play a Holiday Bowl Game... only to find that the Florida teams from Orlando and Miami never showed up.

"I'm mad because they didn't show up we had a 20 hour drive to be here to play a game," said Michael Brow, a Texas player.

The Florida Texas youth holiday bowl is supposed to give kids from other areas the chance to see two Tallahassee Universities, and it also benefits an academic after-school program at Northwood Baptist Church in Tallahassee.

After 18 hours and 30 thousand dollars of travel, the parents expected a lot more than just a scrimmage between their own teams.

"Very disappointed, my boys they were ready to play," said Maggie Paneda, a parent of one of the players.

"We cancelled our own All Star game in order to be a part of this," added Brian Morgan, the CEO of the Texas Youth Football Association.

While the parents were upset about the disorganization, the kids say that maybe the teams didn't show up on purpose.

"I think they were scared or something but we came here to play and it's kinda not really fair," said another player Justin Bickham.

Local Businessman and cosponsor Ken Alexander tried to recruit players from Tallahassee.

"I'm trying to salvage what I can out of a horrible situation," said Alexander.

Organizers fear that despite their best recruitment and fundraising efforts, today's fiasco will only leave the visiting Texans with a tarnished image of the community.

Organizers say they don't know why the Florida teams didn't show up today.

with all the comments on this story it looks like somebody would investigate this. This has happened 3 strait years.First year a team from South Florida didnt show to play Tallahassee teams and then the next a Texas team didnt show up to play a Tallahassee team and then this year Texas shows up and the team from South Florida does not.Sounds fishy to me.Where did all this money go these last 3 years from the sponsors?

Certainly sounds like a scam to me...if not...why the delay in explaining to Texas paerents why the "no shows"? It should be a simple matter for organizers to explain why Florida teams x & y failed to show...or at least provide names of coaches from Florida teams that were scheduled to play to provide their own explanations about "no-shows". Since still no details on why the "no shows" occured has been provided, it certainly makes you wonder if any Florida teams were ever scheduled to play in the first place...which could explain the difficulty in providng even the most basic details about why and how on-shows occured. I think someone needs to contact Florida news stations/papers and local Florida politicans and demand for satisfactory answers to ensure this same thing doesn't happen again.

Let's keep Pop Warner out of this. Charles M at Big Bend has done an outstanding job regulating ALL of the parks various misdeeds. I appologize on behalf of the State of FLORIDA for all of the inconvinience that you Texas teams had. Tell your boys that we will see them at a bowl game one day! ;) "The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender." - Vince Lombardi. We appreciate your dedication to your kids and football programs in Texas, and the practice they put in to battle our teams. I feel proud! Everyone knows the best football comes from Texas and Florida!

My son played in the Holiday Bowl when he was in the 8th grade,we took 4 teams and played teams from South Florida. It was unorganized but we did play. The next year he went out again for the 14yr old team and was suposed to play at Bragg Stadium but it got moved to Corey field in Quincy, but the Morning of the game we found out the South Florida Team wasnt going to show.We had 4 teams [7,8][11,12][13,14]ready to play. The next year my son didnt go out but they called him the day before they were supossed to play an All Star team from Texas at Famu stadium and he went and practiced 1 day and when we got to the stadium and warmed up found out the Texas team wasnt going to show,And now it has happened for a third year in a row with a team driveing all the way from Texas.Somebody needs to investigate this

it seems that everything that gets planned at bragg stadium gets messed up...is there a common denominator?

I think it should also be noted that the newspaper states Nita Boykin was coordinator of the games and Bobby Bowden helped sponsor the event. Maybe they should be asked also what happened.
