Can Volunteer Work Keep You Young?

A nine-year-long study shows a little volunteer work goes a long way, and when researchers say a little, they really mean it.

Seventy-three-year-old Jean Colley retired seven years ago from the state, so for the past seven years, Jean has volunteered at the Tallahassee Senior Center. According to a new study by FSU social work professor Jim Hinterlong, this was the perfect solution.

Over a nine year period, Hinterlong found an improved sense of well being among volunteers 60 years and older, even if they only worked less than two hours a week.

Whatever the benefits, Woodville's Violet Felber says she's up for any job.

The study also shows elderly volunteers live healthier and happier lives regardless of race, gender or type of volunteer work.
