The chances of a deck with the 4th of July right around the corner, plenty of folks will celebrate by going to deck parties.
Over the weekend there was a deadly reminder to have your decks check out and maintained. A deck collapsed in Chicago where witnesses say, mostly college students were having a party. In the end, 12 people were killed and almost 50 were sent to the hospital.
Experts say there are things that you should be aware of when having a deck built. They say; if the deck is more than 30 inches off the ground, hire professionals to design and build the deck, never try to build one on your own to save money.
Also, make sure whoever you choose to work with is using the proper most durable materials. If you already have a deck, experts recommend walking all around it with a screwdriver and checking for any soft spots. Also, if the deck wasn't built with galvanized equipment, it may be a good idea to have a professional come out to inspect the deck.
Last November, a deck fell in the FSU area, and it was discovered that the problem wasn't with the deck, but really, with the house. The deck was bolted into the house, and the wood from the house started to rot and couldn't support the weight of the deck. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt in that incident.
