Jimmy Carter in Valdosta With Habitat for Humanity

Updated: Wed 6:35 PM, Jun 11, 2003

Valdosta is one of three cities to host this year's Jimmy Carter work project, except for the group of secret agents escorting the former president and the high security surveillance, it was just like any other day at the work site.

When they say folks from all over come to volunteer, they mean it. That includes Mr. Carter himself and other premier international leaders.

Day number five at the Jimmy Carter work project site, and by now it's almost a routine deal, except for the presence of Jimmy Carter himself, helping celebrate the 20th anniversary of the program.

After lunch, President Carter went straight to work on house number six, working right alongside the homeowner, just as he did earlier this week at the other two host sites.

Carter says he truly believes habitat is an example of Christians putting their faith to work. Volunteers like the first president of Zambia says it's an experience that will create lasting friendships.

Mr. Kaunda has great spirit. He has been working at the site all week. Now, Mr. Carter was hammering away between the hours of 1:00 to 4:00, which was probably the hottest part of the day.

Mr. Carter will be attending and speaking at a dinner set to begin at 6:30 p.m. where habitat will honor the house sponsors and donors.
