Recoverers of drugs and alcohol took to the streets of Tallahassee on Friday.

Marchers started from the Governor's Mansion and made their way to the Capitol lawn while singing songs of recovery. It was done in recognition of National Alcohol and Drug Addition Recovery Month.

Some have battled cocaine, crack and alcohol for years, but now they are taking steps toward their freedom.

"People don't understand, when you come from the dark into the light, what it really means. You have come from a life of degradation into a place where you can say, 'hey, there is value in my life,'" explained Derrick Steele, who is recovering from drugs and alcohol.

Organizers say this month more than 360 similar marches will be held across the country.
