Some area residents may soon be seeing more of a presence from sheriff's deputies. Taylor County's new proposed budget includes an additional sheriff's deputy.
The deputy would patrol the south end of the county, typically the coastal communities.
Nearby residents say it will help them feel safer as well as hopefully clean up what they say is a drug problem.
Melissa Roberts, a Taylor County resident, said, "I think it's a great idea, especially with the drug problem we have coming off the canals in this area. I definitely think we need more law enforcement down here."
The proposed 2006-2007 county budget will be finalized after two public hearings. The first hearing is Monday at 5 p.m. at the County Administrative Office.
