Eighteen years later, Dr. James Eaton founded the Black Archives Research Center and Museum. Over the years, the history professor received $12 million in grants and built up a collection of more than 10,000 artifacts and documents.

Dr. Eaton's passion has always been teaching, especially school children, black and white, who come here on field trips, and by preserving history, he will go down in history himself.

Eaton is being honored at a retirement celebration Friday evening. He says you'll still see him on campus, as he makes sure the expansion of the archives building, which he calls his baby, goes as planned.
