Bush Vetoes High-Speed Rail

Updated: Mon 9:09 PM, Jun 23, 2003

Gov. Jeb bush believes he is likely to be sued because he vetoed $7.2 million in funding for the high-speed rail project.

Bush says another $4.9 million being spent on inter-modal centers as part of the high speed rail project should keep the state in the clear, but the governor made it clear he thought the state should not be spending money on high speed rail.

"In central Florida developing a regional transportation strategy will benefit the millions of people who live in central Florida, compared to a train that goes relatively fast between Orlando and Tampa. Similarly in south Florida, we have huge regional transportation needs that need to be addressed in a more comprehensible way," Gov. Bush says.

Lawmakers were asked to repeal high-speed rail, but have so far refused.
