They say you are what you eat and in order to make sure students in Florida are getting a healthier start while at school, there's a new initiative that's linking local farmers with school districts.

Organizers say the "Farm to School program is a win-win for everyone.

Students will get fresh fruits and vegetables, local farmers will be able to boost their business and school districts will save money because they'll pay less in transportation costs.

"And frankly you can go another step further and say less of a carbon footprint because obviously vehicles create pollution and if you've got less transportation, you're reducing your carbon footprint,' says Liz Compton of Florida Agricultural and Consumer Services.

So far 48 schools have signed up within Florida to be apart of the campaign.

Simply amazing to see that what used to work sooooo well before the thought of corporate megafarms, "extended shelf life", and centralized regional supply centers it turns out the way some things were done 30 & 40 years ago ARE better. Don`t you think the lack of chemicals and preservatives on the food will help healthwise especially with the younger children? Sure, there will still need to be a "trade" of Kansas wheat flour for Florida citrus - but at least there is an effort to support local farms and businessess.

President Obama heads to Cleveland, Ohio Wednesday to announce a series of measures he hopes will help jump start the economy. He'll propose letting businesses write off all their new investments in plant and equipment through 2011. According to the New York Times, the President also hopes to help consumers by extending Bush-era tax cuts for families earning less than 250,000 dollars a year. But he will rule out any compromise that would extend the tax cuts for the wealthy.
