Mourning the Loss of Local Treasure

Updated: Mon 5:50 PM, Oct 13, 2003

Valdosta mayor James H. Rainwater has died. The 62-year-old mayor collapsed in his home Sunday morning complaining of chest pains while talking to a friend on the phone.

He was pronounced dead one hour later at South Georgia Medical Center. The cause of death has not been released, pending notification of his family members. City officials are expected to meet this week to discuss the mayor's unexpired term.

Rainwater began his civic service as a councilman in 1986 and became mayor in 1988. Rainwater is survived by two daughters, a son-in-law and two grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements have been set for this Wednesday at 11 a.m., and the viewing is tomorrow beginning at noon. The family will be receiving visitors from 6 until 8.
