Many Tallahassee Muslims say they feel safe and sound since 9/11. The news follows the latest reports that show hate crimes against Florida’s Muslim community are on the rise.
Florida State University students, who gather at the Islamic mosque every Sunday, spoke out about hate crimes. They say stares and a few derogatory comments may come their way, but many feel most harassment is in the big cities.
“I actually did have someone say something to me in Jacksonville North Carolina, said Karen Scott. “But in Tallahassee it's been pretty good, and as a FSU student it's been excellent.”
The group did recall an incident in 2002 when Charles Franklin of Tallahassee crashed into their mosque. Franklin was sentenced to two years in prison for the attack.
