Leon County Jail Woes

A big budget means a big cut for the Leon County Sheriff's Office, $340,000 in all. Most of the lost spending was to go toward new positions at the jail annex. Instead of hiring them during the fiscal year, the sheriff will wait until the next calendar year.

The county will be renovating the complex next to the county jail, where Sheriff Larry Campbell says he continues to battle overcrowding where it was nearly 300 inmates over capacity on Wednesday.

Sheriff Campbell said, "We're juggling it on a day to day basis. The bad part is we're heading into the heavier season; more arrests are made as the colder months come. Closer to Christmas we'll get more arrests by all the agencies."

One hundred fifty non-violent inmates will be housed in the jail annex when renovations are complete by the end of next year.
