Bush Signs Elections Bill

The measure also suspends the state's traditional primary runoff election for next year.

The governor hopes the money will go a long way toward helping to make sure next year's presidential election runs more smoothly than the one in 2000.

In addition to suspending the second primary next year, the new law also sets the 2004 primary election for August 31. That's nine weeks prior to the general election.

It will be the second consecutive election year that Bush and the Republican-controlled Legislature have suspended the primary runoff.

The second chance has catapulted many of the state's best known Democratic politicians to office in the past half-century.
